Cat Tengu is an Uber Rare Cat that can be obtained by playing the Rare Cat Capsule during The Dynamites event. It was added in Version 11.7.

Strategy/Usage

Tengu is designed to counter Baron Seal and Archangel Exiel, as its abilities make Tengu a good pick for those two Gauntlet bosses in particular. Keeping a decent distance from the boss with the ability to knock it back occasionally helps keep the pressure off of your attackers. Outside of the two Colossus bosses, Cat Tengu is essentially your average specialist midranger, being a decent choice against his targets but also pretty replaceable. It does, however, have a cheap cost and fast recharge time for an Uber, so it can be a good pick on cash-tight stages.

Appearance

• Normal Form: A white tengu creature, with a small Cat on their waist. Uses a khakkhara as their main weapon. During their attack they use their powers of fire and wind control while charging with their weapon.
• Evolved Form: Their feathers became black on the tips and curve outwards. The khakkhara gained spikes on the bottom and the tengu himself grew a small tied up beard, his eyes also turned red. They now wear some armor on their waist, wrists and shoulders. They fly a bit higher and their fire and wind attack is bigger and redder during the attack animation.

Trivia

• Cat Tengu is based on tengu, a class of bird-like yōkai in Japanese mythology. The staff it wields is a khakkhara, a metal-ringed staff used by Buddhist monks and many depictions of tengu.
  • Tengu are one of the few yōkai to have appeared in all three of PONOS' major tower defense titles (The Battle Cats and the more yōkai-focused Kyoutou Project and YuruGeGe). The others are oni, kitsune, kappa and nekomata, which appear in The Battle Cats as Lesser Demon Cat, Trickster Himeyuri, Kappy Jr. and the cats floating beside Kyosaka Nanaho, respectively.
    • Out of the three games, The Battle Cats is the only one in which tengu are never fought as enemies.
  • Cat Tengu is the second tengu-based Uber Rare Cat, the first being Karasu-Tengu Tenten.
