During every battle, the player must deploy Cat Units (also known as just Cats) in order to defeat Enemy Units and destroy their base. The Basic Cat is the only Cat Unit available at the start of the game, but more can be unlocked by playing Cat Capsules or beating stages. There are currently (version 9.6) over 500 different Cat Units.
- See Special Abilities.
- See Talents.
Cat Units are sorted into six different rarities: Normal, Special, Rare, Super Rare, Uber Super Rare and Legend Rare. Rarer cats tend to be more powerful, but also cost more to deploy and recharge slower. There are also two sub-rarities: Legend (Special) and Crazed (Super Rare).
The Upgrade Menu allows the player to spend XP to level up Cat Units, increasing their health and attack power. The XP costs will increase with each upgrade until level 10, at which point they will decrease only to become even higher after a while. This pattern continues all the way up to level 10.
There is a limit to how many times a unit may be upgraded. The level cap is initially 10, but it can be increased all the way up to 50 for most units as the player raises their User Rank and progresses through the game. See Category:Normal Cats, Category:Special Cats, Category:Rare Cats, Category:Uber Rare Cats and Category:Legend Rare Cats for each rarity's level caps.
In addition to standard levels, many units can also upgrade to + levels (also known as (+) levels). Each + level is equivalent to a standard level but counts toward a separate cap. + levels are attained by "using" duplicate Cat Units in Cat Storage; as a result, non-gacha cats can never upgrade to + levels.
Every Cat Unit has up to three different forms that they can switch to and from between battles: Normal, Evolved, and True. Each form has a different name, appearance, and potentially stats and abilities.
When unlocked, each unit only has access to its Normal Form. The Evolved Form is automatically unlocked upon reaching level 10 and will usually have higher health and attack power or no stat changes at all. True Forms, however, tend to have different requirements depending on the unit:
- Gacha Cats' True Forms can be unlocked using a set amount of Catfruit and XP when at level 30 or above;
- Normal Cats' True Forms are automatically unlocked at level 20+10;
- Other non-gacha cats typically require the player to beat their Awakening Stages and upgrade them to level 20.
True Forms provide different bonuses depending on the unit but are usually more powerful than either of the previous forms.
