Issun Boshi (Uber Rare Cat)

Not to be confused with the PC exclusive Issun Boushi (PC Uber Rare Cat).

Issun Boshi is an Uber Rare Cat that can be obtained by playing the Rare Cat Capsule during the Ancient Heroes Ultra Souls gacha event. It was added in Version 12.1.

Strategy/Usage

Like the other Ultra Souls, Issun Boshi has significantly different stats between Normal (spammable) and Evolved Form (high performance), both of which can be used effectively depending on the situation.

Normal Form

Issun Boshi is best compared to the likes of Teacher BearCat and Mushroom Cat, with low range, decent health, average disposability and most importantly the ability to shut down its foes in close quarters combat with its crushing attacks by bursting damage. While anti-Traitless units often occupy an invaluable niche and demolishing angels is always welcome, this unit is held back by its terrible range. The only Angels it could outrange are Gabriel (80) and to a lesser extent, St. Dober (130, with an Omni Strike that hits up to 200) when aided by crowd control units. As for traitless enemies, they are either absurdly easy to defeat in general, or steamroll this unit anyway. This often leads to its surge immunity doing literally nothing, as its cooldown, cost and range do not allow it to even serve as a filler anti-surge meatshield, nor to counter surge enemies, even within its target traits; Kappy/Uril deal too much damage for it to handle with great range, and St. Dober, when fought properly, will not even get the chance to produce surge attacks. Its extreme knockback count prevents it from delivering any damage, as all it takes is just one hit from an enemy outranging it to stunlock the unit. These compounded problems often eliminate all of Issun Boshi's relevance.

Evolved Form

Oni Landshaker Kozuchimaru's only notable gain is an Omni Strike that doubles its effective range, but in practice nothing changes, as while it can hit enemies behind its initial target, it isn't doing much to address them otherwise. Unlike other Ultra Souls, it does not gain additional standing range to fight off enemies that would have countered it. While its cooldown and cost are both low for an uber, comparable to the likes of Keiji and Yukimura, it is unlikely to have any meaningful impact due to its low health, high knockback count and nonexistent defensive abilities hindering it from dealing additional damage apart from the initial hit.

Appearance

• Normal Form: A small Cat with hair in a bowl floating on water. It is paddling with a chopstick and carries a sewing needle with red string on the bowl.
• Evolved Form: The Cat now rides a vehicle similar to a submersible but is floating atop water. The vehicle is characterized by two bright lights in front, two horns on top resembling an Oni and small spikes on the bottom.

Trivia

• Issun Boshi is based on the fairy tale "Issun-bōshi", in which an inch-tall samurai gets swallowed by an oni, but escapes by stabbing it in the stomach with a needle, then later marries a girl it kidnapped.
• Oni Landshaker Kozuchimaru is based on the C-explorer 3 subermersible, evidenced by the ONI-03 written on the side.
