Kappy Kawano (川野かわわっぱ, Kawano Kawawappa) is a Traitless enemy that appears in the Great Advent Stage Invasion of the Swamplord.

Enemy

This enemy works very much like Kappy Jr. He has massive health and deals extreme damage at mid-range split into three closely-spaced multi-hits, each causing a Surge Attack that can hit much further than Kawano himself. If that wasn't enough, he is immune to weaken and dupes any surges hitting him, dealing damage equivalent to his first hit. He is slower, tougher and has fewer knockbacks, but there is still a significant delay between his attacks.

Strategy

Kappy Jr.'s old man may seem terrifying at first, with his great reach, very high damage, and the ability to spawn up to THREE Surge Attacks which can easily crush anything short of Surge-immune units. However, Kappy Kawano's attack rate sits at a staggering 7 seconds, almost thrice of his son. This means that despite his immense damage, stalling this enemy isn't hard when he's by himself. Due to his decently long foreswing, you can potentially let the peons of the first three stages push a little bit to try and make him miss, but don't rely on this as you can find yourself getting overwhelmed by them.

Any units with immunity to Surges can help immensely, both for stalling and damaging Kappy Kawano. Some great units to use for him are Talented Gato Amigo, Cat Cactus and Talented Li'l King Dragon Cat.

Things get complicated in Ghost King Finale where after the base is hit, a Golem Sunfish and Kawano himself will both spawn, with Kappy Jr. arriving after 60 seconds as well. Do as much damage as they can to Kawano before Jr. spawns, as the father-son duo will start pushing insanely hard once they are both on the field, especially with the Golem Sunfish occasionally nuking out your attackers.

Trivia

• Kappy Kawano could be a reference to two different fictional fathers:
  • One is Mr. Yumeno, Sally's father from the first ever magical girl anime, Sally the Witch. The hairstyle and color match up, both have overbearing wives, and the surnames Yumeno and Kawano are both spelled with the kanji 野 in Japanese. Interestingly enough, Mr. Yumeno is also known as the Maō (魔王, "Demon King"), while his own father is referred to as the Daimaō (大魔王, "Great Demon King"), a title also held by the previous Great Advent Boss, Infernal Tyrant Nyandam, in BCJP.
  • Another possibility is the Tekken character Heihachi Mishima, who not only has a similar hairstyle to Kawano, but is also highly muscular, adept at fighting, and can wear a fundoshi (traditional Japanese loincloth) in Tekken 7's DLC. The extremely overbearing wife mentioned in Kawano's Japanese description could be referring to Devil Kazumi, a powerful alter-ego of Heihachi's wife Kazumi who tried to kill her husband.
• Kawano (川野) is a common Japanese surname spelled using the kanji for "river" (川) and "plains", "field", "rustic", or "civilian life" (野).
• Kappy Kawano was foreshadowed by the event poster for the 2023 Summer Break Cats event, which shows a cat using a cucumber as fishing bait.
• His English description has a typo: it says his bitter melon diet "makes him fearsome enemy" when it should say, "makes him a fearsome enemy".
• Speed and attack rate are the only things Kappy Kawano is weaker in than his son.
• Kappy Kawano and Kappy Jr. are the only Advent Bosses to have no abilities that are disabled by the Curse effect.
