Strategy/Usage
This unit is very useful against Red enemies; his range, knockback ability, quick recharge and attack animation make him quite effective, as long as there isn't an overwhelming amount of Red enemies. Use him in numbers as a support to stop the progress of short-ranged Red enemies (such as Bore, Shy Boy and Red Cyclone).
If you can get a big enough stack of Pirate Cats, they can provide an almost guaranteed win against Dark Emperor Nyandam in stages where Nyandam faces the player alone, as a stack of Pirate Cats can effectively stunlock Nyandam with their knockback ability, providing a window of opportunity for attackers.
Later in the game, his use becomes more limited as more stages include backliner enemies that you can't risk pushing towards; even outside of such stages, he becomes outclassed by Sanzo Cat for Shy Boys and J.K Bun Buns, and iCat for other Red enemies.
True Form
Dread Pirate Catley gains more than double the health, 30 more range and a 10% increased chance to knockback Red enemies. the more then doubled health increases his survivability a lot, the 30 more range having the same purpose as it does not really allow him to outrange any Red enemy he couldn't previously. The increased chance to knockback Reds make him more reliable at it, which is always a welcome change. Overall, getting this True Form will be a worthwhile investment for 4-star stages and stages like Ogre Island.
Talents
His Immune to Waves Talent is recommended, as many dangerous enemies have the wave effect and, because he is a Rare Cat, he can be useful for 4 star stages as a wave immune meatshield. However, keep an eye on the wallet when using him! Combine this talent with the ability to survive a lethal strike and an health buff to get a viable anti-wave, ranged meatshield for many situations. This allows Dread Pirate Catley to have one late-game niche, that being stalling Berserkories supported by other short-ranged enemies, like in Boiling Spring.
Attack Buff and Resist Slow are rarely useful and, in general, not recommended to spend precious NP on.

Trivia
- Pirate Cat's description references the popular manga/anime series One Piece. In this series, the protagonist expresses his wish of becoming the King of the Pirates basically every time he has a chance to.
- Dread Pirate Catley's English name is probably a reference to The Princess Bride, since "Dread Pirate Catley" is similar to both the Dread Pirate Roberts and his real name (Westley) from the novel/movie.
- Dread Pirate Catley's Japanese name, Nyack Sparrow (ニャック・スパロウ Nyakku Suparō), is a reference to the Pirates of the Caribbean character Jack Sparrow.
