- William Tell is a folk hero of Switzerland. According to the legend, Tell was an expert marksman with a crossbow who assassinated Albrecht Gessler. Before he could shoot Gessler, he and his son Walter were put on trial to be executed, but were allowed to get out of it under the condition that Tell shoot an apple off his son's head in a single attempt, which he succeeded in doing.
